John Lagnarok Gieg (/gig/) blends and contrasts different genres and eras in his images. Comics, medical illustrations, technical cross sections, graffiti, pre-Colombian art, illuminated manuscripts, mid-century advertising design, Japanese woodblock prints, and scrimshaw are combined in narrative inspiring, dark and humorous ways.
There is an emphasis on hybrids. The characters are ramshackle conglomerates of human, mechanical, animal, and spiritual parts. His unique creatures are eccentric monstrosities with stories of their own. Toad-pugs, winged firecats, clockwork beasts, and enchanted automatons.
Mr. Gieg is a solitary sort who lives in Riverside, Rhode Island. His real middle name is Leonard.
